  they had been before several times and know that i'm a pretty devout catholic, so i'm sure they were just swinging by to get more time for the card.. well, this time the opening line was about the tragedy in ct. i mean, really?

  I'm sure that there are some sincere Witnesses who try to speak from the heart, which is why I give careful thought to what each person says who does stop by my door.

  Why do the Jehovah's Witnesses agree with certain beliefs and not others especially coming from someone they quote most often?

  of course i am talking about tertullian.

  i presented this topic to jehovah's witnesses one time and they were not able to clearly explain why.

  tertullian held certain beliefs contrary to the jws but there are some things the jws do agree with and often quote them in their articles.

  If the Watchtower wanted to be intellectually honest, they should inform their readers of an apologists' positions on doctrinal matters, and then present whatever it was the apologist said. That would be fair. But there is an outright effort on the part of the Watchtower to deceive their readers into believing that they are a) scholarly b) correct and c) that whomever they sourced from has been 'hiding' this critical information all along. In many cases, this ends up being the Catholic Church. Of all of Christendom, the Watchtower hates Catholics most of all and lie or build straw man arguments against the Church at every opportunity.

  the responder is bar-anerges (a popular jw responder on ya) and he is using a common fallacy or perhaps more than one in his response to the question.

  will someone please assist me in narrowing down which one/s he may be using.

  Wow...just....wow. I've been in Y!A on and off for years and if it's one thing I can count on from the JWs it's the copy/paste answers right out of the Watchtower CD-ROM. And this guy has been around in Answers for a long time, too. I think he and Bar are 'elders'.

  i asked for jah to bless and comfort the families of the newtown, ct massacre.

  Could it be that in their zeal to be so different from the rest of evil Christendom, that they choose to not offer prayers because the rest of evil, false religion is doing so? And that they've been operating this way for so long that it's now just second nature?

  No, it's not what Catholicism teaches. The Church does not focus on the 'last days'/armageddon/rapture etc. The Church urges people to get themselves right with God because one never knows when the last day for anyone could come...one could live to be 100 or get hit by a bus tomorrow. The focus is on the four final things: Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell.

  The verses they gave me were all the same I've heard before...nation will rise against nation, children will hate their parents, no love, etc. Then we got sidetracked into a talk about God's name. They claimed that the Church 'suppressed' God's name and that the Jews were just superstitious. I tried to explain the theological significance of I AM, but I could tell their eyes glazed over. It was kinda sad.
